Assessment options include:

Written reports will contain a summary of your child’s background history, observations, assessment results, recommendations and strategies to get started with.

If your child requires a comprehensive language AND literacy assessment, two x 1.5-hour assessment sessions will be recommended to complete formal and standardised measures in areas of language, reading, spelling and writing. Additional information may be obtained through classroom observations, review of relevant professional reports, collation of parent, teacher and student questionnaires and possible phone liaison with early years/school staff (with your consent).

Following assessment, intervention may be recommended for your child. The type and frequency of intervention will be based on your child’s individual needs. Liaison with the staff at your child’s school/early learning centre and fortnightly, weekly or twice-weekly sessions are typically recommended. Sessions can be provided in the comfort of your own home or at your child’s early learning centre/school. Therapy sessions are informed by current research, goal focused, fun and individually tailored to your child’s needs and interests. For maximum progress, a commitment to practicing new skills and strategies between sessions will be required.

For children who are struggling to acquire literacy skills, the pace of learning that occurs in a mainstream classroom can often feel overwhelming. This may result in your child developing anxiety, low self-esteem and reduced motivation to learn.

Years of research tells us that children benefit from a learning environment where reading, spelling and writing skills are taught explicitly, sequentially, systematically and with plenty of repetition. Our struggling readers and writers need even more frequent opportunities to re-visit new skills.

I am trained in the Sounds-Write Program and specialist teaching approaches for students with dyslexia and other specific learning difficulties. I provide structured literacy sessions within a nurturing one-to-one environment, aiming to:

• Provide the knowledge and skills needed to boost your child’s progress in reading, spelling and writing.

• Teach your child strategies to compensate for weaker underlying skills that may be impacting on your child’s literacy development.
